Speed up industrial internet with ARM mbed

Espotel is a member in the ARM mbed ecosystem. This gives us access to ARM’s embedded systems and IoT technology, and a unique opportunity to now combine ARM mbed technology with IBM’s cloud solutions for versatile industrial internet applications.

Because the mbed ecosystem is particularly targeted for IoT, I believe it will give a significant boost to the development work. There are significant companies as members in the mbed ecosystem, which is also important. Our role is to act as an integrator utilizing the technologies to create applications with real business value.

The mbed ecosystem has been around already for 7 years but the breakthrough is still to come. All ARM based processors will immediatey be up and running when using the mbed tools, and as we know there are plenty to choose from. The main things the mbed ecosystem provides are:

Productivity. Tools, OS and a hardwareabstraction layer in a single package available for dozens of different ARM based processors.
Security. Security is built in. Also hardware encryption support in the HAL.
Communication protocols. Several possibilities to choose from to get the devices connected to the internet in a controlled fashion.


Things get really interesting when the mbed OS, gateway and device manager modules are available later this year. Alpha version of these exist already. More about this in articles that will follow.

Mikko Elomaa is Chief SW architect and ARM mbed specialist at Espotel. Mikko holds an M.Sc. (2004) and a PhD (2010) in Automation from the Aalto university. Prior to joining Espotel Mikko worked as a researcher in the Automation technology lab at Aalto University and as an exchange researcher in CEA-Leti in Grenoble, France.
