World's first LoRaWAN certification!

World’s First LoRaWAN Certification testing was done in Espotel’s laboratory in Jyväskylä, Finland:

The industrial Internet is growing and spreading quickly. Where there is a need to collect data from an Internet-of-Things (IoT) network consisting of a large number of devices or to control devices in a large area, a long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN) is a powerful data transfer solution.

Modulation technology of LoRa provides a clearly longer range than competing technologies.

LoRa’s advantages consist of its excellent range, low power consumption, good data security, and good ability to penetrate obstacles. In addition, it is completely bidirectional, enabling remote control applications.

Battery powered LoRaWAN sensors can remain operational for up to 10 years.

Purpose of LoRa certification

The purpose of certification is to ensure that a product complies with the LoRaWAN specifications and is compatible with LoRaWAN networks. Therefore it is extremely important for manufacturers to receive LoRaWAN certification for their products. Only then can LoRa network operators be sure that a product functions correctly in their networks, without interfering with others.

Testing is done by means of the test mode of the LoRaWAN specifications. It checks the different functions such as channel selection, encryption, the adaptive data rate feature, etc.

The test reports of certified products are published on the website of the LoRa Alliance.

A turnkey service

Espotel was one of the first members of the LoRa Alliance. Now the LoRa Alliance has approved Espotel’s LoRa certification testing as the first in the world. We can apply for the required official approval and carry out LoRaWAN compatibility tests.

We can also deliver the approved test results to the LoRa Alliance, which then grants the LoRaWAN-certified status to the product, which again gives the right to use the LoRaWAN Certified logo with the product.

In addition to the LoRaWAN certification, assistance can be provided in meeting other national and international regulations.

All of Espotel’s LoRa testing takes place in its laboratory in Jyväskylä, Finland.

Importance radio performance

Radio performance measurements ensure the devices’ reception is good even where coverage is weak. There are typically two extremes in radio device testing: the minimum requirements of the technology and the upper limits set by regulations.

Products have to exceed the technology’s minimum requirements to perform correctly in all situations and live up to the promises given. For a lower power technology like LoRa, good radio performance is essential for many reasons. On the other hand, the authorities check that the prescribed upper limits are not surpassed, for example by maximum transmission power. So devices have to be powerful enough, but not too powerful.
